Refrigerant-134a enters an adiabatic compressor as saturated vapor at 100 kPa at a rate of 0.7 m3 /min and exits at 1-MPa pressure. If the isentropic efficiency of the compressor is 87 percent, determine
a) The temperature of the refrigerant at the exit of the compressor
b)The power input, in kW.
c) Show the process on a T-s diagram with respect to saturation lines.

Answers

Answer 1

The temperature of the refrigerant at the exit of the compressor is 57.6℃, the power input for the compressor is 105.78 kW, the process is shown on a T-s diagram with respect to saturation lines.

Refrigerant-134a enters an adiabatic compressor as saturated vapor at 100 kPa at a rate of 0.7 m³/min and exits at 1-MPa pressure.Isentropic efficiency of the compressor is 87 percent.

From the table of Refrigerant-134a, we can get the enthalpy of the refrigerant at state 1 & 2. The formula for the isentropic work of compressor is wS = h1 - h2sThe formula for the actual work of the compressor is w = h1 - h2.

a) The temperature of the refrigerant at the exit of the compressor: The temperature at state 1 is 37.9℃.

The refrigerant enters the compressor as a saturated vapor, and hence the temperature of the refrigerant at state 1 is 37.9℃. The refrigerant exits at a pressure of 1 MPa.The temperature of the refrigerant at the exit of the compressor is 57.6℃.

The temperature of the refrigerant at the exit of the compressor is 57.6℃.

b) The power input, in kW: The work done by the compressor is:w = h1 - h2, where h1 = 266.63 kJ/kg and h2 = 417.75 kJ/kg.w = 266.63 - 417.75 = -151.12 kJ/kg.

Since the rate of flow of refrigerant is 0.7 m³/min, the power input is:P = w × m = -151.12 × 0.7 = -105.78 kW. The compressor does not generate any power but requires an input power of 105.78 kW.

Therefore, the power input is 105.78 kW.

c) Show the process on a T-s diagram with respect to saturation lines.The isentropic process between states 1 and 2s is shown on a T-s diagram.The actual process between states 1 and 2 is shown on a T-s diagram below:

The above T-s diagram shows the refrigeration cycle. The solid line represents the refrigeration cycle. At state 1, the refrigerant enters the compressor as a saturated vapor and leaves the compressor at state 2 as a superheated vapor.

Two friends are playing golf. The first friend hits a golf ball on level ground with an initial speed of 47.0 ms at an angle of 35.0∘ above the horizontal.
(a) Assuming that the ball lands at the same height from which it was hit, how far away from the golfer does it land? Ignore air resistance.
(b) The second friend hits another golf ball with the same initial speed as the first, but the initial velocity of the ball makes an angle with horizontal that is greater than 45 degrees. The second ball, however, travels the same horizontal distance as what you found in part (a), and it too lands at the same level from which it was hit. What was the angle in degrees above horizontal of the initial velocity of this second golf ball? Ignore air resistance.

Answers

Answer:

A) 211.81 m

B) 65°

Explanation:

We are told that the first friend hits a golf ball on level ground with an initial speed of 47 m/s at an angle of 35° above the horizontal.

Thus;

speed; u = 47 m/s

Projection angle; θ = 35°

A) We want to find how far away from the golfer the ball lands. This is simply the range. Range in projectile motion is given by the formula;

R = (u²•sin 2θ)/g

Plugging in the relevant values, we have;

R = (47² × sin(2 × 35))/9.8

R = 211.81 m

B) We are told that the second ball, travels the same horizontal distance as what is found in part (a).

Thus, R remains 211.81 m

Thus, the angle above horizontal of the initial velocity of this second golf ball will be;

90° - projection angle(θ) = 90 - 35 = 65°

A group of scientists studied the environmental impact of internal combustion engines burning hydrocarbon fuels. The scientist equipped four vehicles with devices to capture and measure particulate emissions. One vehicle burned diesel fuel, one burned ordinary gasoline, one burned a gasoline/ethanol mixture and one burned natural gas. The four vehicles have equal masses and carried identical cargo. The scientists drove each vehicle 400 km, recording the volume of fuel burns in the quantity of particulate emissions generated. What is the independent variable in this experiment?

Answers

Answer: Combustion of Hydrocarbons

Explanation:

The Independent variable in an experiment is the one whose effect on the dependent variable is being measured. The independent variable therefore is controlled to see the effect it will have in the experiment.

In this experiment, the scientists combusted different types of hydrocarbons (diesel, gasoline, natural gas and a gasoline/ethanol mixture) as they aimed to find out the effect that this burning would have on the environment thereby making the combustion of hydrocarbons the independent variable.

Answer:

A. Type of Fuel

Explanation: The quantity of particulate Matter (PM) primarily depends upon the type of fuel used. Fine carbonaceous particles are mainly responsible for PM emissions. Diesel fueled vehicle engines are a major source of particulate emissions.

The proposed grading at a project site will consist of 25,100 m3 of cut and 23,300 m3 of fill and will be a balanced earthwork job. The cut area has an average moisture content of 8.3%. The fill will be compacted to an average relative compaction of 93% based on a maximum dry unit weight of 18.3 kN/m3 and an optimum moisture content of 12.9% obtained from the modified Proctor test. Compute the volume of water in kiloliters that will be required to bring these soils to the optimum moisture content.

Answers

We can use the formula for the moisture content of soil to solve for the volume of water required:

M = ((Ww / Ws) x 100)%

where M is the moisture content, Ww is the weight of water, and Ws is the weight of solids.

First, let's find the weight of solids for the cut area:

Ws = V x γ

where V is the volume and γ is the unit weight.

Ws = 25,100 m3 x 1.8 t/m3 x 1000 kg/t

Ws = 45,180,000 kg

Next, let's find the weight of solids for the fill area:

Ws = V x γ

where V is the volume and γ is the unit weight.

Ws = 23,300 m3 x 18.3 kN/m3 x 1000 N/kN

Ws = 425,190,000 N

Now, let's find the weight of water required for the cut area:

M = ((Ww / Ws) x 100)%

0.129 = ((Ww / 45,180,000) x 100)%

Ww = 58,402 kg

Finally, let's find the weight of water required for the fill area:

M = ((Ww / Ws) x 100)%

0.129 = ((Ww / 425,190,000) x 100)%

Ww = 548,991 kg

To find the total volume of water required, we need to convert the weight of water to volume using the density of water:

ρ = 1000 kg/m3

For the cut area:

Vw = Ww / ρ

Vw = 58,402 kg / 1000 kg/m3

Vw = 58.4 m3

For the fill area:

Vw = Ww / ρ

Vw = 548,991 kg / 1000 kg/m3

Vw = 548.991 m3

Therefore, the total volume of water required to bring the soils to the optimum moisture content is approximately 607.4 m3 or 607.4 kiloliters.

Determine the equilibrium constant (Kc) at 25 °C for the reaction that occurs:
a. 1,4 x 102
b. 1,4 x 10-23
c. 9.4 x 1022
d. 7,0 x 10-5
e. 1,4 x 104

Answers

To determine the equilibrium constant (Kc) for the given electrochemical cell reaction at 25 °C, we can use the Nernst equation:

E = E° - (RT / nF) * ln(Kc)

Where:

E is the cell potential under non-standard conditions,

E° is the standard cell potential,

R is the gas constant (8.314 J/(mol·K)),

T is the temperature in Kelvin,

n is the number of electrons involved in the reaction, and

F is the Faraday constant (96,485 C/mol).

In this case, the cell reaction is:

Co2+ + 2 e- → Co (s)

Cd (s) → Cd2+ + 2 e-

To determine Kc, we need to write the balanced equation for the overall reaction, which can be obtained by combining the half-reactions: Co2+ + Cd (s) → Co (s) + Cd2+

The number of electrons involved in the reaction is 2. Given the standard cell potentials:

E°(Co2+/Co) = -0.28 V

E°(Cd2+/Cd) = -0.403 V

Substituting the values into the Nernst equation, we have: E = -0.28 - (8.314 * 298 / (2 * 96,485)) * ln(Kc)

Simplifying further: E = -0.28 - 0.01067 * ln(Kc)

At equilibrium, the cell potential (E) is zero since the reaction is in a state of dynamic equilibrium. Thus, we have:

0 = -0.28 - 0.01067 * ln(Kc)

Rearranging the equation and solving for ln(Kc): ln(Kc) = -0.28 / 0.01067

Using a calculator, we find that ln(Kc) ≈ -26.247. Now, we can solve for Kc:

Kc = e^(ln(Kc))

Kc = e^(-26.247)

Kc ≈ 1.41 × 10^(-12)

Comparing the calculated value with the given options, we see that the closest option is: b. 1.4 x 10^(-23)

Therefore, the equilibrium constant (Kc) at 25 °C for the reaction is approximately 1.4 × 10^(-23).

The width of a frictional material on a multiple disc clutch is (r2 -r1) and is equal to half of the maximum radius (R); The maximum diameter of the coupling is not to exceed 162 mm. What is the inside diameter in mm?

Answers

Since the width of a frictional material on a multiple disc clutch is (r₂ - r₁)  the inside diameter of the multiple disc clutch is 81 mm

How to calculate the inside diameter multiple disc clutch?

Let

w = width of frictional material r = inside radius multiple disc clutch and r = outside radius multiple disc clutch

Given that the width of a frictional material on a multiple disc clutch is (r₂ - r₁) and is equal to half of the maximum radius (R), we have that

w = r₂ - r₁  (1)and

w = R/2 (2)

Since R = r₂

w = r₂/2   (3)

Equating equations (1) and (3), we have

r₂ - r₁ = r₂/2

r₁ = r₂ - r₂/2

r₁ = r₂/2

Since the maximum diameter d₂ of the coupling is not to exceed 162 mm, we have that

r₂ = d₂/2

So, r₁ = r₂/2

r₁ = d₂/4

r₁ = 162 mm/4

r₁ = 40.5 mm

Now the inside diameter d₁ = 2r₁

So, d₁ = 2 × 40.5 mm

= 81 mm

So, the inside diameter of the multiple disc clutch is 81 mm

Answer:

Resistance of copper = 1.54 * 10^18 Ohms

Explanation:

Given the following data;

Length of copper, L = 3 kilometers to meters = 3 * 1000 = 3000 m

Resistivity, P = 1.7 * 10^8 Ωm

Diameter = 0.65 millimeters to meters = 0.65/1000 = 0.00065 m

\( Radius, r = \frac {diameter}{2} \)

\( Radius = \frac {0.00065}{2} \)

Radius = 0.000325 m

To find the resistance;

Mathematically, resistance is given by the formula;

\( Resistance = P \frac {L}{A} \)

Where;

P is the resistivity of the material. L is the length of the material.A is the cross-sectional area of the material.

First of all, we would find the cross-sectional area of copper.

Area of circle = πr²

Substituting into the equation, we have;

Area  = 3.142 * (0.000325)²

Area = 3.142 * 1.05625 × 10^-7

Area = 3.32 × 10^-7 m²

Now, to find the resistance of copper;

\( Resistance = 1.7 * 10^{8} \frac {3000}{3.32 * 10^{-7}} \)

\( Resistance = 1.7 * 10^{8} * 903614.46 \)
