excerpt from The English Renaissance of
Art
by Oscar Wilde¹
Currently, perhaps one of the most difficult things for us to do is
choose a notable and joyous dress for men. At present we have
lost all nobility of dress and, in doing so, we have almost
destroyed the modem sculptor. And, in looking around at the
figures which adorn our parks, one could almost wish we had
completely killed the noble art. To see the frock coat² of the
drawing room³ done in bronze, or the double waistcoat
perpetuated in marble, is a new horror. Indeed, in looking
through the history of costume, seeking an answer to the
questions we have put forth, there is little today that is either
beautiful or appropriate.
One of the earliest forms of fashion is the Greek drapery5, which
is exquisite for young girls. And then, I think we may be
pardoned a little enthusiasm over the dress of the time of
Charles 16. His fashion was so beautiful indeed, that in spite of
its invention being with the Cavaliers, the Puritans copied it.
And the dress for the children of that time must not be passed
over. It was a very golden age for the little ones. I do not think
that they have ever looked so lovely as they do in the pictures of
that time. The dress of the last century in England is also
especially gracious and graceful. There is nothing bizarre or
strange about it. It is full of harmony and beauty.
In these days, we hear ladies boast that they do not wear a
dress more than once. In the old days, when dresses were
decorated with beautiful designs and worked with exquisite
embroidery, ladies rather took a pride in bringing out the
garment, wearing it many times, and handing it down to their
daughters. This process would, I think, be quite appreciated by a
modern husband when called upon to pay his wife's bills.

Answer 1

The author connected past English fashions and the American fashions of the time in this way:

D. He criticizes American fashions by negatively comparing them with older English styles.

What was the author's views?

The authro clearly detested the modern fashion sense that many Americans have. he noted how the older English women wore dresses that were richly embroidered and took pride in repeating these dresses and how their husbands were also very proud of them for this.

This was not the case with modern fashion styles that tend to wear more shabby dresses and also not repeat them.

explan the treatment of types and static semanic errors on the attribute grammar of the calculator language

Answers

The attribute grammar of the calculator language addresses the treatment of types and static semantic errors. It defines rules and mechanisms to handle type checking and detect and handle static semantic errors within the language.

In the context of the calculator language's attribute grammar, types are associated with various language constructs, such as variables and expressions, to ensure type correctness during program execution. The attribute grammar specifies rules to perform type checking and enforce type compatibility and consistency.

Static semantic errors, which refer to violations of language rules that can be detected at compile-time, are also addressed. The attribute grammar defines error-handling mechanisms to identify and report static semantic errors, providing appropriate error messages or actions to guide programmers in resolving these issues. By incorporating these treatment mechanisms, the attribute grammar ensures the correctness and reliability of the calculator language during the static analysis phase.

#SPJ11

The treatment of types and static semantic errors in the attribute grammar of the calculator language involves a step-by-step process to ensure the correct interpretation and analysis of the program's syntax and semantics.

1. Types: In the calculator language, types refer to the classification of data and variables. The treatment of types in the attribute grammar involves verifying that the operations and expressions used in the program are compatible with the expected data types. This is done to prevent type errors during the execution of the program. For example, if a variable is declared as an integer type, the attribute grammar checks that only integer operations are performed on that variable.

2. Static Semantic Errors: Static semantic errors occur when the program violates the language's rules or constraints, even though it may have correct syntax. The treatment of static semantic errors in the attribute grammar involves identifying and reporting these errors before the program is executed. Examples of static semantic errors include using an undeclared variable, assigning a value of incompatible type to a variable, or calling a function with the wrong number or type of arguments.

To treat these errors, the attribute grammar of the calculator language performs the following steps:

1. Parsing: The attribute grammar parses the program's source code to create a parse tree or an abstract syntax tree (AST). This tree structure represents the program's syntax and captures the relationships between different elements of the code.

2. Type Inference: The attribute grammar performs type inference to determine the data types of variables and expressions. This is done by analyzing the types of operands in operations and ensuring compatibility. The attribute grammar also checks for type declarations and ensures that variables are properly declared before use.

3. Type Checking: The attribute grammar checks that the operations and expressions used in the program are compatible with the expected data types. It verifies that variables are assigned values of the correct type and that operations are performed on compatible data types.

4. Error Reporting: If any type or static semantic errors are found, the attribute grammar reports them to the programmer. The error messages provide information about the location of the error in the source code and the nature of the error.

Overall, the treatment of types and static semantic errors in the attribute grammar of the calculator language involves parsing the program, inferring and checking types, and reporting any errors. This process helps ensure the correctness and reliability of the program before it is executed.

The compare and contrast Langston Hughes' "Harlem [2]" and Louise Driscoll's "Hold Fast Your Dreams,” explaining the similarities and differences between the two poems’ are given below

Langston Hughes' "Harlem [2]" and Louise Driscoll's "Hold Fast Your Dreams" are two poems that explore the theme of unfulfilled dreams. While both poems share this common theme, they differ in their word choice, use of rhyme, and overall tone.

What is the comparison about?

In "Harlem [2]," Hughes uses vivid imagery and metaphors to convey the frustration and disappointment felt by African Americans whose dreams have been deferred. The poem is written in free verse, without any discernible rhyme scheme. Instead, Hughes uses repetition and alliteration to create a sense of rhythm and musicality. For example, he writes, "Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? / Or fester like a sore - And then run?" The use of these images and rhetorical questions creates a sense of urgency and bitterness in the poem.

Therefore, In contrast, Driscoll's "Hold Fast Your Dreams" is written in a more traditional form, with a regular rhyme scheme and meter. The poem has a hopeful and uplifting tone, encouraging readers to hold onto their dreams even in the face of adversity. Driscoll uses words such as "hope," "joy," and "beauty" to convey a sense of optimism. For example, she writes, "Hold fast your dreams within your heart / Keep one still secret spot / Where no wind, no tide can part." The use of rhyme and meter creates a sense of stability and order in the poem.
